ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL (ULSD) FUEL

The year 2006 saw the transition from higher sulfur diesel fuels to the ultra clean, Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel.  ULSD, as it is called, contains less than 15 ppm sulfur and allows emissions of diesel engines to attain the most environmentally friendly level in the history of diesel engines.  Gone are the days of high diesel exhaust fumes.  The advent of ULSD will, in most engines, eliminate odors long associated with higher sulfur diesel fuels that were commonly used in the marine and commercial fishing industries.  So, the need for odor reducing chemicals in diesel fuel has greatly diminished.

As a result of the advance of ULSD chemistry, some marine engines will operate in a much more efficient clean burning manner without the use of additives.   On the other hand, some engines will benefit from the use of diesel fuel with additives such as those which provide characteristics shown below.  For those engines, using Energize fuels utilizing a more effective lubricity additive together with a cetane booster, fuel system cleaner, and fuel stabilizer ingredients, will add to an engine’s overall efficiency.  All of this adds up to the most clean performance fuel available to marinas serving the private and commercial fishing industries.  And, these fuels will be priced lower than most other fuels containing similar type additives.

Minto Energy Corporation has teamed up with Power Service to provide a specialized additive for the Energize Clean Performance Marine Diesel Fuels program.  Power Service is a company that has been formulating diesel additives since 1956, and is a nationally recognized leader in fuel additive formulations.  Information about Power Service and its quality products can be viewed on their website, www.powerservice.com.  Power Service fully supports Minto Energy and its Energize Marine Fuels branding programThe robust performance of these specialized fuels offers all marinas a competitive edge to current alternatives.

A few of the major benefits to the utilization of Energize Clean Performance Marine Fuels, with Power Service, will provide users:

  • ULSD compliant additives containing less than 15 ppm sulfur which is effective in all diesel fuels
  • Slickdiesel” lubricity for maximum fuel lubrication
  • Protection of fuel pumps and fuel injectors against accelerated wear from Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuels
  • Cleaning action of dirty injectors, including high pressure common rail injectors
  • A cetane boost of up to 6 numbers for faster cold starts, smoother running, less power lag
  • A decrease in fuel consumption of up to 8%
  • Power boosts  -decreases need for power surges during high-load conditions
  • Prevention of thermal oxidation breakdown of diesel fuel
  • Protection against sludge formation that plugs fuel filters and injectors
  • Stabilization of stored diesel fuel
  • Stabilization of gasoline

Additional benefits of Energize fuels may include, upon request, biocide additives for “quick kills” of bacteria, anti-gel solutions, and water dispersants.  All of these products are compatible with the specialized additive found in Energize marine fuels.

Energize Fuels with Power Service Boosts Cetane up to 6 Numbers

There is a direct relationship between a diesel fuel’s cetane number and its ignition point.  Delayed ignition is a primary cause of increased emissions and inferior engine performance.  The lower the cetane number, the longer the ignition delay.  Fuels with high cetane numbers burn more quickly and more completely, resulting in smoother running engines with less power lag and easier engine starting.

New Advanced Injector Cleaning Technology

Energize Clean Performance Marine Fuels with Power Service have been formulated to contain the most advanced injector cleaning technology.  This technology provides maximum injector clean-up of injection deposits in all fuel injection systems, including High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) systems installed on 2007 and newer engines.  The engine operational improvements are significant:

  • Decreased fuel consumption up to 8%
  • Increased power and reduced need for power surging
  • Smoother and quieter engine operation

ETHANLO BLENDED vs. CLEAR GASOLINE

The “what abouts” surrounding ethanol blended gasoline are curious and interesting.  Most of the newer gasoline marine engines are approved for the use of ethanol blended gasoline.  The challenge remains though…

“what about the use of ethanol blended gasoline in older gasoline marine engines and older boats with gasoline tanks that may not be suitable for ethanol blended gasoline?”

“Won’t I get better service out of clear gasoline in my gasoline engine approved for ethanol blended gasoline?”

These are legitimate questions and concerns.  As a result of the concerns, most marinas are dispensing clear gasoline, or non-ethanol blended gasoline.  Most people believe that clear gasoline is more efficient, produces more btus, and as a result, is more energy efficient than ethanol blended gasoline.  The practice of maintaining clear gasoline in marina inventories is a prudent move, and one that is probably the smartest move for the immediate future until more results are available to marinas so that more educated decisions can be made about what to keep on hand.

So if you are going to use clear gasoline, what does that mean…is there an advantage to including additives in clear gasoline?  Most producers of gasoline will tell you that gasoline really does not need any additives.  Those additives are blended into gasoline at the refineries and as a result provide excellent performance in their original form.  There are some who believe, and rightfully so, if clear gasoline is going to be dormant in a tank for more than a period of 3-4 months, then a fuel stabilizer may be introduced into the fuel tanks for increased octane stability.  Again, on the other hand, there are users of clear gasoline that do not use fuel stabilizers and will not run their boats from late fall to early spring without any noticeable performance difference in their engines.  This then becomes a decision by the boat owner, or marina, to decide whether or not a fuel stabilizer should be introduced into the fuel system.
